One of the major features of Minder, was the association of the characters with their cars. Anyone who knows anything about Minder is likely to know Terry drove a white Ford Capri and Arthur drove a 'Jag'.
On this page we discover that the car is quite literally the star!

SERIES 1 & 2
FORD CAPRI - SLE 71R
This car appeared in various guises throughout series 1 and 2.

The most famous Ford Capri is without doubt, that which is driven by Terry in the opening titles of The Terry McCann Years and at various times during the series - it is the most famous of the Minder cars.

Fans of this car, the original white 1976 Mark II Ford Capri 2.0S driven by Terry in the opening titles and at various times throughout the series, will be pleased to know that this car has been rescued from the scrapheap and is available to seen today at various motor enthusiast events in the UK. We are proud to show you some recent pictures of this excellent restoration work.

In July 2005, Terry's Capri was voted the 28th Greatest TV car ever by viewers of satellite channel Sky One. A short clip of the car featured on this show along with its red 1980s Arthur Daley tax disk!

Newspaper reports about this car have suggested that after it was originally sold, it was used by a gang involved in a drugs racket after which it was saved from the crusher!

The car itself is currently owned by John Hill, the chairman of the Capri Club International. After purchasing it for £1500, John Hill approached Phil Blundell and Jeremy Redman of Bletchley based PMB Mobile Servicing to restore the car to its original glory days.

For information about this excellent restoration work and 'The John Hill Capri' you can contact the Capri Club HQ, Badgers Hill, Sheriffs Lench, Evesham, Worcs WR11 4SN - or telephone (01386) 860860 within the UK.

Throughout the series various other Ford Capri's were used by Terry. In many cases, the Capri fan could quite easily spot errors in continuation and Terry's unbelievable ability to drive various versions of the car from one episode to the next.

FORD CAPRI - JRX 782P

Apart from in the opening titles, this was the first ever Capri used in the series.
This shot is taken from episode 2 Bury My Half At Waltham Green.

Terry uses this car to collect a person who he believes to be Albert Stubbs from Wormwood Scrubs.
In fact he collects con-man and decoy George Wilson played by Nicky Henson.

DVLA records suggest this car is on authentic plates and its road tax last ran out in November 1983.

FORD CAPRI - SLE 71R

In series 2 an alternative Mark I version of the Capri was used. Notice how the number plate is exactly the same in this shot, taken from the episode Caught In The Act, Fact.

In this shot, also notice to the slight damage to the car's right front light - we can only wonder why this car was chosen here, particularly as it appears to be damaged.

At the time it would seem TV companies would purchase a variety of different car number plates and use them on a number of different cars or use third party firms to supply the cars.

ROLLS ROYCE - SLE 71R
Did George Cowley steal Terry McCann's Capri?

Here we see a very interesting photograph of the late great Gordon Jackson as George Cowley from the hit series The Professionals. This picture is taken from Dave Rogers book 'The Complete Professionals'. What's the number plate?

The book itself has become something of a rarity for collectors and I guess only the DVLA can provide some background as to which car was originally registered with the SLE 71R number plate. Just for the record, this car never featured in Minder.

FORD CAPRI - RLW 17R
This car is the infamous 'Continuation Crisis Capri'.

In this shot, taken from the series 1 episode You Gotta Have Friends it is difficult to ascertain if this is simply the original SLE 71R car with different number plates on it, or if it is indeed a totally different car altogether.

The episode itself suffers a major continuation crisis when Terry heads off to find Arthur as scenes switch between the car shown here and the original SLE 71R Capri! Perhaps the producers thought we wouldn't notice?

SERIES 3 - MJN 701V

In series 3 we see the original SLE 71R car episode 2, You Need Hands. The car is being repaired by Des and as can be seen from the photo on the left, it has suddenly sprouted some trendy mudflaps. These are never seen in any other appearance by that particular car and following this scene the car breaks down, never to be seen again. This is the only time it appears in this particular series and is also one of the few that features Arthur's original Jaguar, suggesting that certain episodes in series 3 were filmed at a totally different time to the others.

In the other two shots above we see Terry driving about in a gold Capri Mk III. The shot in the middle is taken from the episode Why Pay Tax? and the shot on the right is taken from Dead Men Do Tell Tales. This car only featured in series 3. Dead Men Do Tell Tales was episode 1 of series 3, adding further weight to the argument that You Need Hands could have been filmed at a totally different time to the other episodes.

A LITTLE BIT OF GIVE & TAKE
- UNKNOWN WHITE CAPRI

The registration of this white Ford Capri is unknown and only appears very briefly in the anti-drugs episode A Little Bit Of Give & Take when Terry takes Shaun to his cousin's party.

The following excerpt is taken from The Chris Routh Interview
(see left menu) for the complete version.

Chris recalls "I also remember that the Capri used in this particular episode is not the Capri that the company normally used. The producer rented the car off a woman for about £100 for the day.

You don't see much of it in the episode (deliberate) but if you look carefully, the damn thing was knackered - not the Capri Terry would drive."

SERIES 4 to 6 - EUC 223V

This Mk III Capri was used from series 4 right up until the end of The Terry McCann Years. Interestingly we also see a shot of what would be Terry's last Capri in the first ever episode of the The Ray Daley Years also.

This particular shot is taken from the series 4 episode

A Star Is Gorn.

What is also interesting is that this car featured longer in the series than the original 'John Hill Minder Capri', though most people will turn their head at the original car because it featured each week in the opening titles and nobody will blink an eyelid at this one!

Series 7 Capri

SERIES 7 - LTF 980P

In series 7 we only catch a glimpse of a white Capri in It's A Sorry Lorry Morrie when Terry is giving a driving lesson.

This car doesn't last long as it is soon hit in the rear by a Melish & Rycott. DVLA records show this car's number plate to be real although the car the plate was originally registered to was in fact blue.

Series 7 Capri

SERIES 8 - UNKNOWN MARK III CAPRI

Series 8 Capri

In series 8 the legacy of Terry McCann and his white Ford Capri lives on for one last time when Arthur goes around to Terry's flat to find out he has moved out and left his keys behind.

There is no full shot of this car at any point in the episode and we only catch a glimpse as Arthur pulls up on to the driveway. A very sad moment for both Minder fans and Capri fans as we begin to discover that Terry has left.
